The Language
of Letting Go (Hazelden Meditation Series) (Paperback) by Melody
Beattie
For more than a decade, millions of readers have turned to Beattie's
classic meditation book, THE LANGUAGE OF LETTING GO, as a wellspring
for daily reflection, affirmation, and change. With honesty and
encouragement, she reminds readers that each day is an opportunity
for renewal.
Beattie was a struggling single parent of two children and freelance
author and journalist cranking out stories for a small-town daily
newspaper in 1986 when she came up with a book idea. She wanted
to write a book about what happens to people when they love someone
who is addicted to alcohol and other drugs."'There were many books
out there about how to help an addict or alcoholic. Nobody was
talking about how an addict impacts the lives of the people around
him or her, and how crazy you can become when you love someone
who is addicted,"' Beattie said. "'Even though I was sober, I
didn't know how crazy I could get until it happened to me."' Twenty
publishers turned down Beattie's book proposal. "'It's a good
idea, but we don't think there's that many codependents out there,"'
they wrote back.Hazelden, however, a treatment center and recovery
publisher based in Minnesota, saw a need for the book. The publisher
understood how families of alcoholics suffer and believed Beattie's
book idea would

Practicing
the Power of Now: Essential Teachings, Meditations, and Exercises
from The Power of Now (Hardcover) by Eckhart Tolle
This manual-style book instantly dives into Eckhart Tolle's principles
of "living in the moment," which could be a jarring experience
for readers who haven't read his preceding book, The Power of
Now. For the initiated, though, this makes an excellent companion
guide--rich in exercises and meditations to help readers get out
of their minds so they can live more peacefully in their bodies.
Sometimes it's hard to fathom what on earth Tolle is talking about:
"To regain awareness of Being and to abide in that state of 'feeling-realization'
is enlightenment." Be patient. All concepts will be revealed (or
at least more carefully explained). Ultimately, Tolle leads readers
into a new form of thinking (or actually not thinking) that erases
the consuming habits of waiting, worrying, and being in fear.
The first step is ending the "delusion of time." He asks, "Are
you always trying to get somewhere other than where you are? ...
Is most of your doing just a means to an end?" If so, Tolle has
a book full of advice for you. As simplistic as this may sound,
Tolle's work has spiritual merit and depth, especially for frantic
Westerners who find their lives diminished by packed schedules
and busy-ness

Grace For
The Moment (Hardcover) by Max Lucado
For such a small book, Grace for the Moment© has had a major impact
on countless lives. With more than 2,500,000 copies sold, this
devotional continues to touch lives as it emphasizes the help
and hope of God in everyday moments. Each daily reading features
devotional writings from Max Lucado's numerous bestsellers as
well as a Scripture verse selected especially for that day's reading.
The design of the book is lovely, small but with 398 pages rather
weighty; it has a preface and 3 marvelous pages on reasons for
choosing "love, joy, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness, and self-control". Each month starts with a sepia
toned photograph of trees or leaves, which is subtly reproduced
on the following pages of the month. The font size is not large,
but very clear and easy to read. It is an aesthetically pleasing
layout and this devotional makes a perfect gift for Christmas,
to keep on one's desk or prayer corner, and to be cherished for

Meditation
For Dummies (Book and CD edition) (Paperback) by Stephan Bodian
"To tell you the truth, you can learn the basics of meditation
in five minutes," asserts Stephan Bodian, meditation instructor,
psychotherapist, and former editor-in-chief of Yoga Journal. You
can also study meditation for years, exploring its subtleties.
Meditation for Dummies is a simple, clear introduction to the
basics of meditation, including an overview of dozens of techniques,
practices, and specific meditations, plus direction for going
deeper. You get step-by-step instructions for a variety of meditations,
including body position, mental concentration, where to put your
attention, what to contemplate or notice, physical movements,
and breathing. A nice touch is the recurring "traditional
wisdom": ancient stories or anecdotes that make a point.
This book is useful whether you want the nuts and bolts for getting
started in the next minute or you want to dip your mind into different
practices and philosophies. Nothing is too elementary to explain:
"how to sit up straight--and live to tell about it,"
what to wear, dealing with fear and self-judgment, and what to
do when you get "stuck." You also get plenty of information
about the benefits and varieties of meditation. You're bound find
and develop a practice that feels right for you. .

One Breath
at a Time: Buddhism and the Twelve Steps (Paperback) by Kevin
Griffin
The first question to come to my mind with this title was what
is the relationship between Buddhism and the twelve step program?
Author Kevin Griffin answers this question succinctly when he
points out that the Buddha said the cause of suffering is desire
and the twelve steps program tries to heal people from the most
extreme of desires - addiction. This book is about Mr. Griffin's
personal path to addiction recovery and how integrating Buddhism
and the twelve steps allowed him to become at peace with himself.
He explains Buddhist meditation and the Buddhist eight-fold path
as it parallels the twelve step path. While the twelve step program
allows for a lot of flexibility in terms of the "Higher Power"
you reach out to, many groups have a Christian focus. Kevin Griffin
provides an alternative for those who are uncomfortable with a
Christian focus but want to overcome alcoholism and co-dependency.
"One Breath at a Time" is a deeply personal story of one man's
journey and he invites you to travel his path from realization
that he had a problem to freedom and shares how you can take the
same path.
